A young m an crossed the sea a thousand miles away from his home only to bring light to the heathen people. Nommensen was born on 6 February 1834 to a poor family in Germany. Nommensen committed his life to God since he miraculously healed from his injuries. After graduating from missiology school and being ordained in October 1861 at Barmen, German, he began his journey on December 24, 1861, sailing a ship for 142 days landed in Padang. Nommensen worked with other missionaries before he penetrated the shore of Lake Toba. He stayed at a few places like Barus, Sibolga, or Batang Toru Rivers which the majority was Islam. Since the Islamic mission very strong at that time, Nommensen face difficulties to deal with them. Sometimes his heart melts because saw the people scarify their life for the pilgrimage to Mecca. As his focus go to the centre of paganism in Silindung Valley, he avoids to trouble with Islamic people.10 He had nine children from two wives, some of his children were helping him during his ministry to the Batak people. After going through trial and tribulation in Silindung Valley, Nommensen open a community for new Christian named it Huta Dame (Village of Peace). The conversion of Raja Pontas, the chief leader of the villages made the gospel spread even faster. After years spread the gospel in the land of batak people, Nommensen had privileged to reach a ripe old age full of strength of body and mind. His successful ministry can be seen in the 50th anniversary of the Batak mission on October 7, 1911. God called him home in 1918, and Nommensen left the batak with Batak people become Christian was 180. 000 baptized members, 510 schools, 788 Batak teacher, 2200 elders also 34 Pandita ( Pastor ) Batak.11
