Background
Christianity have grown rapidly in Batak land, North Sumatera, Indonesia. The ethnic church of Batak (HKBP) recorded at least have four million people registered under church this ethnic church in 2019.2 This number is not including the Batak people join other Christian denominations outside of the Protestant Christian Batak Church (HKBP).3
A great number of Christian came from the life of missionaries sacrifice themselves for the glory of gospel in Batak land. There were few missionaries served the people in lake Toba, some of them like Richard Burton and Nathanael Ward in 1824, not to forget the death of two missionaries from the US, Henry Lyman and Samuel Munson in 1834 4 and some Dutch missionaries for which their research were inspired Nommensen. Their life, knowledge, and experience open a new door to the ministry to the Batak people.
Nommensen gains the vision after influenced by two instructors who earlier did a research in Batak land. The first impression he had from Dr. Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk, in his research he explained about Batak culture and language. He explained the difficulties to approach local people in interior Lake Toba. He also points out the urgency for the missionary to enter this land because another religion, Islam, emerged rapidly in the area of Mandaling and Barus, North Sumatera. He suggested the missionary focus on the land that was yet entered by the Islamic missionary as soon as possible, like Silindung Valley.5 Another information he had from Dr. Junghuhn, he particularly points out about the bulwark of paganism at the center of Lake Toba. These two pieces of research direct Nommensen attention .6 After listening to their conclusion, Nommensen decided to cross over the ocean to win the Batak people for Jesus. The Batak people had known as cannibal and believe in the power of the evil spirit. They had been practising this before Christian entered the land, daily practice like tortor (traditional dance for the spirit), the ritual of sacrificial, and people seek health treatment from witch doctor. There are two important leaders in their community, the witch doctor and the leader of the village. Slavery and human trafficking were common practices in the local people at that time. The social issue and dehumanizing had a strong root in the Batak tribe. While the social conflict inter the clans arose significantly. Because of this background, the situation was very dangerous for missionary to entered the batak land.7 All missionaries who entered the Batak land must ready to give their life. Before they start they mission often time they send a letter to their friends just in case something happens to them they know where they go, included Nommensen.8Besides the internal factor, the external factor gives another complexity to penetrate this area. The war between Sisingamaranga IX, the political and spiritual leader, versus the Dutch Government make the local people reluctant to accept white man . They consider the white men as the delegation from Dutch to destroy the harmony of the village. Another factor was the aggressiveness of Islam, Islam penetrating with force to this land makes the people afraid and looking for a new religion to accommodate their custom ( Adat ), social structure, and language seriously.9
