Introduction Introduction Introduction The story of the Protestantism mission in Batak land (North Sumatera) Indonesia cannot be separated from the story of the great missionary from German, Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen (1834–1918) who arrived in Sumatra in 1862. His dedication to the Batak people had transformed the people in Silindung Valley and Batak people, in general, to be more humanize and spiritual. Nommensen is not the first missionary landed in the Batak land, but his effort and dedication to the batak people make a big change, from cannibal to the light of Jesus Christ. This paper aims to explain the strategies of Nommensen won the Batak people to Christianity. At first, we will look at the socio and cultural practices of the local people before Christian era. After that some historical background of Nommensen and his journey to reach Silindung Valley, the central of paganism. At the entry stage, we will look at the challenge, strategies and adjustment to win people to Christianity. At the post-mission stage, we will look at the discipleship structure to speed up the gospel to the other villages. Lastly is the implication and legacy from Nommensen to the mission in this century.
